This Working Group exists to facilitate the sharing of roads data between regional planning organizations, local governments, state agencies, and the public. This valuable dataset requires substantial production efforts by city and county GIS departments, NC Department of Transportation and others. The Working Group’s goal is to put together a roads framework based on content standards and facilitate maintenance of the data through an online, automated process among state and local agencies. The Working Group is collaborating with NCDOT to achieve an integrated statewide dataset of all roads and highways. As for other priority datasets, the NC OneMap Geospatial Portal will be a web location for public discovery and access to roads.
The WGRT received a grant from the Federal Geographic Data Committee to develop a web-based data transformation tool to assist local data stewards with converting their data into common formats. The grant was completed in October 2012. By November, WGRT members and local government partners loaded street centerlines for 82 counties to the translator.
The WGRT is now working on a plan to achieve 100 percent participation by counties and to implement a program for making quarterly updates. For information about participating in the effort, contact one of the WGRT co-chairs. The work of the WGRT, which includes representatives from across North Carolina, is a wonderful example of the NC GIS community working together to solve the challenges of sharing data and developing valuable statewide datasets.
